  • Be the first in-house engineer, shape the future of an established SaaS platform
  • Enjoy genuine remote/work from home flexibility anywhere in New Zealand
  • Build technology where Te Ao Māori and Māori data sovereignty are fundamental
About the Company
Our client is a purpose-driven technology company transforming how environmental and resource management decisions are made across Aotearoa. By bringing together council data, private landholder information and field-collected observations, they help communities see the bigger picture and make better decisions for land and water.
Supporting Māori to thrive as kaitiaki is central to their mission, with Te Ao Māori and Māori data sovereignty embedded in the way they design, build and evolve their technology. It isn’t something that’s been added on top - it’s an integral part of their journey.

About the Role
This is a rare opportunity to become the company’s first in-house engineer. The platform is already live and has been developed over the past three years by an experienced external engineering partner. They’re now bringing engineering capability in-house for the first time, creating a rare opportunity to shape the technical future of the business.
You’ll report to the CEO and work closely with the Business Analyst and Product Lead. None of the leadership team come from deeply technical backgrounds, meaning you’ll genuinely be the most technically experienced person in the business. You’ll take ownership of an established AWS serverless platform, guide architectural decisions, and help the leadership team make confident decisions about the platform’s future. This is a senior individual contributor role with the opportunity to grow into technical leadership as the company expands.
One of your first major projects will be leading the migration of the platform’s portal suite from Angular to React, setting the technical direction for how the platform evolves from here.

Skills & Experience
  • Senior software engineering experience, with the confidence to own architecture and technical direction.
  • Strong commercial experience with TypeScript, Node.js and React.
  • Experience building and supporting AWS serverless applications, including Lambda, API Gateway, Cognito and relational databases such as PostgreSQL.
  • Practical, day-to-day use of AI coding tools to improve software delivery and engineering productivity.
  • Experience taking ownership of products and delivering outcomes with minimal structure or oversight.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
  • A genuine commitment to working in an environment where Te Ao Māori, Māori world views and Māori aspirations shape how technology is designed and delivered.
What You’ll Own
  • Take ownership of an established multi-tenant, serverless AWS platform, including the Rongo field application and the StreamDASH, StreamMAP and Tūhono product suite.
  • Lead the migration from Angular to React while influencing the long-term technical roadmap.
  • Make key architectural and technology decisions, considering how those decisions support Māori data sovereignty principles and the long-term evolution of the platform.
  • Partner closely with the CEO, Business Analyst and Product Lead, translating complex technical decisions into practical business outcomes.
  • Work remotely from anywhere in New Zealand with genuine work-from-home flexibility.
  • Join a purpose-led organisation where your work directly contributes to better environmental outcomes across Aotearoa.
  • Grow into future technical leadership as the engineering capability expands.
Ready to make an impact? This role won’t suit everyone. If you prefer well-defined structures and clear direction, this may not be the right environment.
But if you’re motivated by meaningful work, enjoy taking genuine ownership, and want to build technology where Te Ao Māori, Māori world views and supporting Māori to thrive as kaitiaki genuinely shape how software is built, we’d love to hear from you.
