About the role

We're working with an established software company looking for a Lead Database Engineer to take technical ownership across their database environment.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role, working closely with Software and Platform Engineers to improve database reliability, performance and scalability.
The wider team already has strong cloud and Infrastructure as Code capability, so database depth is the priority here.

What you’ll be doing

• Performance tuning and query optimisation
• Improving database reliability, scalability and capacity
• HA/DR, backup and recovery
• Supporting database migrations and production changes
• Improving monitoring, automation and operational practices
• Working with engineers on database design and delivery
• Setting good database engineering standards and practices

What they’re looking for

• Strong SQL Server and T-SQL experience
• Deep knowledge of database performance and production reliability
• Experience with HA/DR, backup/recovery and migrations
• Azure SQL or cloud database experience
• Exposure to automation, CI/CD or IaC is useful
• A collaborative, modern approach to database engineering

They’re not looking for a traditional DBA who wants to gatekeep everything. You’ll enjoy sharing your expertise, working with engineers and finding better ways to automate and improve how databases are operated.
